This wonderful piece is from Shan Xi province, an ancient state of China. The area is famous for producing rich, aromatic, dark vinegar. Historically these jars were used to store the prized liquids. Now, their rustic, artistic appeal with the beautiful black gloss and patina make them fantastic design elements. Used singularly or in a grouping, they add boldness and contrast to a space. This particular piece has its original rope handle, which is rare, and adds more rustic charm. These pieces are also great for flower arrangements.
Substantial, all original, 19th century.
