A very rare piece from the Kingdom of Kandy, which was an independent monarchy of the island of Lanka, founded in the late 15th century and endured until the early 19th century.
This work represents the Kandyan-period style of Buddha imagery at its best. The Buddha's physique is upright, elegant. His face is serene. The Dhyana mudra symbolizes absolute balance, release of anger and internal harmony. Details of the hair design, lotus throne and sashes draped around the Buddha's bodice are other wonderful features.
The technique is of the Lost Wax Technique, which is no longer done in Sri Lanka since the last century.
One of a kind. Remarkable condition. Rare.
