Our antique goose basket is one of the most charming vernacular pieces from southern China. Used in the 19th century river/stream front villages, the basket was an important household item. Girlfriends, often the daughters of the villages, would make plans to wash clothes together at the river side. Each of them would have carried such a basket, with the underside of the goose's neck resting gracefully over their arms. Laughing and sharing stories, laundering clothes was a very happy, and beautiful social event.
