A beautiful 19th century wooden basket designed for holding and carrying a teapot. The hand made hexagonal basket's 6 sides are held together by 2 solid bronze bands. Above the lid lies a carved horizontal bar which acts as the lock to the basket. Lifting a seamless peg allows the bar to slide out of the niches in the holders therefore unlocking the basket. A teapot is placed in the basket with its sprout resting on the front opening. The basket enables easy transport of a hot teapot while providing insulation. It was an essential tool in the 19th century when kitchen was far from the living room. This wonderful piece is in remarkable condition with delicate carvings of scrolls and clouds motif. A lovely collectible from southern China.
