From Shanxi, this 19th century solid wood grain holder is entirely hand-crafted with superb workmanship. The basket is bound with four sturdy iron bands encircling its body, rim, and base, with the top and bottom further reinforced by iron brackets for added strength. In remarkable condition, retaining both its solid wood construction and original character. Ink calligraphy markings reading “Fair Commerce” are still visible, indicating that it once belonged to a merchant’s shop—an evocative testament to the vibrant commercial life emerging in northern China during the 19th century. A pair of wooden side handles allows for easy transport, while the 9.5-inch wide opening makes the piece both practical and well-proportioned. A wonderful example of vernacular history, this grain holder embodies the resilience and vitality of everyday life and trade in Qing dynasty Shanxi.
