A set of three beautifully gilded, carved 19th century wood panels. The three dimensional carvings render a scene from the famous Chinese opera "West Chamber Love Story". The story depicts two young lovers' courage to break through the forbidden tradition to form a love connection. The top panels feature two assistants to the scholar who pays the visit to the garden where he first meets the daughter of the family. The lower left panel depicts the shy girl and tentative disposition of the young man. The lower right panel depicts the second date when the couple becomes closer. The setting in the garden pavilion carved by the master with attention paid to great details, such as overhead pine trees, stone doorways and tiled floors. The original gilding all intact and in remarkable condition. These panels were often used on a wedding bed or a chamber cabinet to symbolize love and unity. Ready to hand with hangers (modern) in the back. Top 6" w x 5.5" h, Below 8"w x 6" h
