The table top is constructed of four mitered, mortise and tenoned frame members within which floats a single board panel, all supported on square legs cut to house the carved spandrels and flank two drawers, carved front of a secret compartment as well as another pair of carved spandrels. The drawer fronts depict a pair of deer each holding a blossoming branch in the mouth, symbolizing happiness and peace, above a panel depicting a young bird in a field of flowers. All spandrels were carved to reflect a fluid scroll and wave pattern. A beautiful, all original piece from the 19th century, Shan Xi Province, northern China.
