A pair of 19th century Chinese elmwood armchairs. An elegant crestrail meets the back stiles which extend all the way through the member of the seat frame to become the back legs. The solid splat carved with a peony descends from the center of the crestrail in a graceful s-curve before joining the seat frame. The armposts bow out to allow more space and seating comfort. Unlike most common chairs, they do not descend straight down, but curve back toward the seat, reflecting the owner's sense of humility and quiet sophistication. The front apron features a traditional "tiger's-mouth" design with relief carving of ancient serpents. These remarkable chairs are in solid, sturdy condition with all original patina. A rare find from Northern China's historic Shan Xi province.
