A set of 2 beautiful, solid brass abacuses. Fine constructed, the rectangular frame divided into an upper and lower deck with a beam, each deck with 17 ( 13 on the left piece) rods piercing through bean counters, each counter of shiny, polished globular form. The abacus was ancient China's essential instrument in commerce. While the earliest known record of this device dates back to circa 1st century B.C., the current rectangular form featuring two decks and multiple rods appears to have been in use since the Ming dynasty. Abacus remains in use in present days and is highly regarded for its speed and accuracy. It is a symbol of prosperity and wealth. 6" x 1.75" x 0.5" and 4.75" x 1.5" x 0.25"
